Poil de Carotte, sebuah novel terjemahan dari Prancis yang ditulis oleh Jules Renard pada tahun 1894. Bercerita tentang seorang anak berambut merah wortel yang tumbuh bersama saudara kandungnya yang kejam, ayah yang dingin dan acuh tak acuh, serta seorang ibu sadis yang terus mengolok-oloknya. Anak bungsu dari keluarga ini tidak mengerti mengapa kedua kakaknya, Felix dan Ernestine mendapat perlakuan berbeda dari kedua orang tuanya, yang dia sendiri tidak pernah merasakannya. Di bawah rambut merahnya, si bungsu Poil merencanakan hal-hal cerdik agar membuat keluarganya terkesan dan menyukai akan keberadaan dirinya. Di antara tipu muslihat, hukuman dan ketidakadilan, Poil berusaha membangun dirinya dan menemukan bentuk kasih sayang. Namun semua itu sia-sia, Poil tetaplah dipandang sebagai anak bodoh yang tidak tahu apa-apa. Hidup dengan penganiayaan, hukuman karna melanggar sesuatu yang sepele, ejekan terus menerus dari dua saudaranya, serta melakukan tugas tanpa pamrih membuat Poil berlindung di bawah alam semesta yang ia imajinasikan sendiri atau dengan Mathilde, teman kecilnya dan satu-satunya anak yang memiliki hubungan persahabatan dengannya.
Poil selalu dipercayakan untuk melakukan tugas yang paling tanpa pamrih seperti menutup pintu kandang ayam di tengah malam, memakan makanan yang tidak disukai semua orang, dia hanya diperbolehkan memakan apa yang tidak disukai oleh ibunya dan harus berbagi tempat tidur dengan teman-temannya. Untuk melawan penghinaan dalam kehidupan sehari-hari dan menantang dunia orang dewasa yang tidak adil, ia harus berani bersikap licik untuk itu. Hingga pada suatu hari, Poil merasa kewalahan dengan perlakuan keluarganya, dia mencoba untuk bunuh diri namun tuan Lepic, ayahnya segera mengetahui perbuatannya. Dia kemudian memahami apa kesalahan putra bungsunya dan menebak sifat baik anak itu. Mereka sekarang (tuan Lepic dan Poil) akan menjadi dua orang yang melawan karakter Mrs. Lepic yang suka melawan. Ayah dan anak laki-laki itu mengakui cinta mereka satu sama lain yang membuat Mrs. Lepic sangat tidak senang.
Dari 49 bab, novel ini menyajikan sebuah pesan bahwa Poil si bungsu memiliki masa kecil yang tidak bahagia akan tetapi tahu bagaimana cara untuk mengatasi realita takdir yang dijalaninya bersama keluarganya. Karakter Poil de Carotte sebagian terinspirasi dari kehidupan yang dialami oleh sang penulis, Jules Renard. Dimana ia mengaku selalu diabaikan oleh ibunya sendiri. Terlepas dari semua drama ceritanya, Jules berhasil mengungkapkan dalam bentuk sinisme dan nuansa humor serta realitas ketidakadilan yang dikaitkan dengan perbedaan pada karyanya tersebut. Hanya saja pada susunan kalimat pada novel ini beberapa cukup sulit untuk dipahami dikarenakan faktor novel terjemahan namun itu tak mengurangi khas dari novel Jules Renard yang menyajikan alur cerita cukup menarik pada karyanya serta penyampaian isi dari novel tidak pasaran dan tidak mudah untuk ditebak bagaimana endingnya.
