ovel ‘’Surya” karya Restu El Tungguri ini menggambarkan tentang kisah masa lalu perjalanan dalam mensyukuri kehidupan dan selalu menerima takdir Tuhan secara ikhlas, meskipun setiap manusia memiliki keinginan yang lebih, namun ketika sang kuasa telah menentukan garis takdir, maka manusia hanya bisa menjalani dengan penuh keikhlasan dan selalu berusaha untuk memperbaiki kehidupan kedepannya. Di dalam kehidupan menentukan sikap sangatlah penting, karena hanya sikap yang akan membuat diri selalu bisa bertahan di tengah kuatnya gempuran badai dalam kehidupan, dan adanya cobaan serta tantangan dalam kehidupan, menjadikan pertanda bahwa Tuhan percaya, kita sebagai manusia dapat melaluinya.
Surya, adalah sebuah nama yang memiliki makna penerang, sesuai dengan maknanya, Surya adalah seorang anak yang menjadi penerang dalam keluarga dan orang-orang sekitarnya. Ia berhasil mematahkan rasa keegoisan dalam dirinya, dengan jiwa yang besar Surya mampu untuk memendam dalam-dalam cita-citanya. Karena Surya menyadari, keadaan ekonomi kedua orang tuanya, sangat tidak memungkinakan Surya untuk melanjutkan sekolah ke jenjang yang lebih tinggi. Munculnya sikap dan pola pemikiran Surya seperti sebuah pepatah jangan biarkan keadaan mengontrolmu, dan diri sendirilah yang harus bisa mengontrol keadaan. Rasa berbakti seketika muncul dalam diri Surya, apapun keadaannya Surya tetap bisa menerima dan berdamai dengan kehidupannya.
Tokoh utamanya adalah Surya, seorang anak yang duduk di masa Sekolah Dasar, Ia bersekolah di Sekolah Dasar yang berada di desa Lereng Gunung Braja. Surya sangat disenangi oleh teman-temannya, karena ucapanya sering kali membuat tawa dan dirinya yang selalu memperlihatkan sikap yang baik, membuat teman-temannya merasa nyaman berteman dengan Surya. Ketika masa Sekolah Dasar akan tamat, menjadikan kegelisahan dalam diri Surya, dalam lubuk hati terdalam Surya menginginkan untuk melanjutkan sekolah ke jenjang yang lebih tinggi. Muncul rasa ketakutan disaat Surya ingin mengutarakan keinginannya ke orang tuanya, khususnya pada sang ayah.
Ketakutan Surya seketika berubah, karena Sang ayah mengizinkan Surya untuk melanjutkan sekolah, rasa semangat dan ketidakkepercayaan Surya membuatnya sangat senang sekali. Namun kesenangan Surya tak bertahan lama, pada dini hari terdengarlah kentongan yang sangat keras, apalagi di desa Surya sudah beberapa hari terguyur hujan. Dan benar saja, pagi harinya ketika Surya melihat sawah milik orang tuanya, ia terkejut dan bersimpuh menangis tersedu-sedu, karena pada masa itulah adalah masa panen padi. Harapan Surya seketika runtuh, karena padi yang seharusnya dapat dipanen dan menghasilkan uang, namun terkena banjir yang disebabkan tanggul di desanya jebol, dan ini sangat mempengaruhi jalan pendidikan Surya untuk melanjutkan sekolah.
Pada akhirnya Surya harus bisa berdamai dengan kehidupannya dan mencoba untuk meringankan beban orang tuanya dengan cara bekerja di luar kota bersama sang Paman. Bukan hal yang mudah, ketika anak masih usia belasan tahun sudah mulai bekerja untuk menghidupi dirinya. Setelah bekerja menjadi kuli bangunan, Surya berganti pekerjaan menjadi karyawan toko. Perjalanan Surya yang terbilang sulit membuatnya untuk terus berbuat baik dan terkadang kebaikan Surya dimata orang lain malah sabaliknya. Perjuangan hidup sendiri di luar kota dan lika-liku kehidupannya semasa kecil, membuat Surya menjadi pribadi yang mandiri dan berpemikiran dewasa. Ia yakin bahwa kisah manusia siapa yang tahu, kecuali Tuhan, dan hanya doa, usaha yang dapat merubah kehidupan.
Bertahun-tahun sudah Surya merantau di luar kota dan biasanya ia hanya mengirimkan surat dan uang ke orang tuanya, sebagai bentuk pengabdian berbakti Surya kepada orang tua. Namun masa itu, Surya kembali ke rumahnya yang berada di desa. Di saat pulang, Surya hanya bisa bertemu dengan sang ibu, karena sang ayah telah meninggal dunia disaat Surya masih merantau di kota. Muncul kesedihan yang amat mendalam bagi Surya, karena pada masa-masa terakhir sang ayah meninggal dunia, surya tidak ada disamping sang ayah.
Beberapa tahun kemudian, akhirnya Surya menikah dengan Wulan yang tempat tinggalnya masih satu desa dengan Surya, dan dari pernikahan tersebut, Surya dikaruniai dua buah hati, anak pertamanya bernama Bintang, karena terlahir bertabur cahaya bintang yang gemerlap di langit malam, dan anak kedua bernama Jingga, seorang perempuan manis dengan sepasang lesung pipit di pipinya.
Kisah badai kehidupan Surya tak berhenti begitu saja, dalam beberapa waktu sang istri yang dicintainya meninggal dunia dan mendiang istrinya berpesan agar Surya dapat menjaga anak-anaknya dengan baik dan penuh kasih sayang. Kedua anaknya tumbuh menjadi anak yang baik, sopan dan penurut dan saling sayang satu sama lain. Pola pengajaran kehidupan Surya dan mendiang istrinya, mengajarkan sang anak untuk turut menerima keadaan yang sederhana. Dan dalam lubuk yang paling dalam, Surya ingin kedua anaknya melanjutkan jenjang sekolah yang lebih tinggi dan dapat meraih cita-citanya sesuai yang diharapkan, agar kelak kedua anakanya dapat menjadi kebanggaan Surya dan mendiang istrinya, dan disisi lain Surya tak ingin kedua anaknya ikut turut mengalami kehidupan yang suli seperti masa lalu Surya yang tidak bisa melanjutkan sekolah ke jenjang yang lebih tinggi. Surya yakin pasti kedua anaknya dapat lebih baik darinya dan kedua anaknya dapat tumbuh menjadi anak yang pintar dan bermanfaat bagi orang lain.
