Buku ini berjudul “Simbolisme Makna dan Efek” yang ditulis oleh Alfred North Whitehead merupakan buku yang membahas karakter umum dari simbolisme. Pada dasarnya, simbolisme adalah penyebab terjadinya kemajuan dan penyebab terjadinya kesalahan. Simbolisme memiliki peran dominan yang didalamnya seluruh organisme yang lebih tingggi melangsungkan hidupnya.
Simbolisme memiliki definisi sebagai pemikiran manusia yang berfungsi secara simbolis ketika beberapa komponen dari pengalamannya menimbulkan kesadaran kepercayaan emosi dan penggunaan serta menghormati komponen pengalaman orang lain. Penjelasan paling mendasar tentang simbolisme telah diberikan ketika membahas hubungan antara sastrawan dan situasi yang menjadi cikal bakal terciptanya sebuah syair. Ini merupakan contoh bagaimana relasi referensi kata menjadi benda akan tetapi relasi umumnya antar kata dan benda.
Ketika terjadi tindakan pengalaman manusia, di situ berlangsung pula referensi simbolik. Pertama, di sana terdapat dua komponen dengan hubungan objektif antara keduanya, dan hubungan ini akan sangat variatif pada situasi yang berbeda. Kedua, persepsi lengkap harus meliputi referensi simbolik dari satu set komponen, yakni simbol, ke komponen lainnya yaitu makna. Ketiga, Bagaimana sekumpulan komponen pembentuk dan selanjutnya membentuk makna bergantung pada bagian khusus tindakan pengalaman itu sendiri.
Sebagai contoh, jika anda sastrawan dan ingin menulis syair tentang pohon anda akan masuk ke dalam hutan untuk mendapatkan kata yang tepat untuk mengekspresikan perasaan tentang pohon itu sendiri oleh karena itu bagi sang sastrawan pada pohon adalah kata adalah makna dari pohon dia akan berkonsentrasi pada pohon untuk mendapatkan kata yang tepat.
Namun, sebagian besar kita bukanlah sastrawan walaupun kita mencoba mencari syair yang mereka tulis dengan sebaik mungkin. Bagi kita kata adalah simbol yang membantu kita memahami perasaan sang sastrawan ketika berada di hutan. Bagi sastrawan pandangan visual bersuara dan pengalaman emosi merupakan simbol untuk kata sebaliknya bagi pembaca puisi syair merupakan simbol pandangan visual suara dan emosi ingin disampaikan sang sastrawan oleh karena itu bahasa digunakan dengan referensi simbolik ganda yakni dari benda ke kata bagi si penulis dan dari kata ke benda bagi pembaca.
Penggunaan simbolisme tidak lengkap tanpa adanya pengakuan bahwa unsur-unsur simbolis dalam kehidupan manusia cenderung liar seperti tumbuh-tumbuhan di hutan tropis. Manusia dapat dengan mudah diliputi oleh aksesoris simbolismenya di setiap masyarakat diperlukan proses pemangkasan berkelanjutan dan adaptasi ke masa depan yang selalu membutuhkan bentuk ekspresi baru keberadaan simbol-simbol lama beradaptasi kemudian berubah sosial adalah tanda terakhir dari kebijakan dan Kewarganegaraan sekali perlu dilakukan revolusi simbolisme.
Sikap umat manusia terhadap simbolisme itu kan percampuran yang tidak stabil antara daya tarik dan daya tolak. Kecerdasan praktis, keinginan teoretis untuk menembus fakta akhir dan impuls kritis yang ironis telah berkontribusi terhadap motif utama terjadinya penolakan dari simbolisme. Orang yang keras kepala meningkat fakta bukan simbol kecerdasan teoretis yang jelas disertai antusiasmenya yang besar terhadap kebenaran yang pasti. Segala cara dan bahaya akan mengesampingkan simbol sebagai sekedar khayalan yang merasa ironis akan kebodohan umat manusia telah banyak melakukan kritik dalam rangka meniadakan pemikiran yang tidak berguna. Melambangkan penyulikan fantasi masa lalu yang kelam penolakan akan simbolisme menonjol sebagai elemen yang ditandai dengan baik dalam sejarah budaya orang-orang yang beradab.
Sebenarnya simbol itu membangkitkan kesetiaan pada gagasan yang dipahami secara samar-samar yang mendasar bagi kodrat spiritual kita. Hasilnya adalah bahwa kodrat kita digerakkan untuk menangguhkan semua impuls antagonis, sehingga simbol memperoleh respon yang diperlukan dalam tindakan. Secara dengan demikian simbolisme memiliki makna ganda. Secara pragmatis arah ke individu ke spesifik dan secara teologis alasan yang samar-samar dengan iringan emosional, yang di dalamnya simbol memperoleh kekuatan mereka untuk mengatur masyarakat menjadi komoditas yang beradab.
